Here we are, talking to God, asking the Creator, Sustainer & Lover all those questions that you mean to ask God, but you were too embarrassed, too busy, too cynical, or too whathaveyou to ask. God, thank you for joining us here today.
NO TROUBLE. I LOVE VISITING WITH MORTALS.
Thanks! Sweet of you to say. Our first question, O Divine Presence, comes from Suzy Q. in Big Foot, Pennsylvania.
Suzy writes, “Hi God, I know we can’t get everything we want and that it isn’t even good for people to always get what they want and sometimes what we desire is not actually desirable from the higher, more spiritual perspective, which is obviously the superior one and the one to aim for. However, I love Johnny P and all I really want is to be with him and share the happy love that I think we could share because I feel it shining between us latent and ripe like a fresh plump peach screaming to be plucked and chomped into, the gushy flesh wrapping around one’s lips, the sweet nectar flowing around one’s cheeks and dribbling off one’s chin. Don’t you think that’s an OK wish that maybe I should get? — because we’d dance with joy together and that’s always an act of praise that lifts mere humans up into eternity, where dwell the thoughts of God ?”
Oh wow! Clearly a lot on Suzy’s mind! Well, what do you think, God?
IT STARTS OUT WISHING FOR LOVE AND THEN FOR SOME SPECIFIC LOVE AND THEN FOR A HAPPY RELATIONSHIP AND FOR EVERYONE INVOLVED TO BE HEALTHY AND SAFE AND WELL-FED AND THEN FOR GOOD JOBS AND A STABLE ECONOMY AND THEN FOR HEALTHY CHILDREN AND THAT THEY CHILDREN DO WELL IN SCHOOL AND ARE HEALTHY AND SAFE AND THEN THAT THE CHILDREN FIND GOOD JOBS AND A SAFE STABLE ENVIRONMENT AND THEN THAT THE CHILDREN FIND MATES OF THEIR OWN AND HAPPINESS THEREIN AND THAT THE CHILDREN’S CHILDREN ARE HEALTHY AND SAFE AND HAVE A NICE SAFE WORLD TO GROW UP IN. AND SO ON.
Yeah, I can see that things quickly get out of hand. That one desire for worldly security, comfort and success soon leads to more and more longing for more and more animal happiness. But can you blame us? Aren’t these all perfectly reasonable human desires? We want families and we want them to be safe and do well. How could we do otherwise? And doesn’t jettisoning such succors often result not in great wisdom, but in great sickness?
So her wish is a reasonable one?
YES. SHE IS FREE TO PURSUE HER HEART’S DESIRE. THE ERROR IS FORGETTING THAT IN THE END THERE IS ONLY THE ONE LIGHT. IN THE ONE LIGHT, NO ONE IS MARRIED AND NO ONE IS ALONE. IN THE ONE LIGHT, NO ONE HAS A BODY/HEART/MIND TO SATISFY.
But why make creatures if we’re not supposed to play at being separate individuals interacting with other individuals within complex environments?
PLAY! THE ERROR IS FORGETTING THAT ONLY LOVE MATTERS.
But Suzy only wants love! Love for her and John and the family she hopes to build with him. It is only natural to want things to go well for those one loves.
YES, BUT PURE LOVE CHOOSES EVERYONE.
Sometimes it seems like trying to be too pure just dries us out and we end up not really loving anyone. Or that we were telling ourselves we were trying to love everyone when we were really just covering up for how we were unable to really share love with those who were actually in our lives.
YOU HAVE TO DO BOTH. YOU HAVE TO LOVE THOSE IN YOUR LIFE AND FULFILL THOSE RESPONSIBILITIES UNIQUE TO CLOSE RELATIONSHIPS. BUT YOU ALSO HAVE TO WALK TO THE PATH OF THE EVER-OPENING HEART, FOREVER WIDENING THE SCOPE OF YOUR COMPASSION AND THUS YOUR ABILITY TO CARE FOR EVERYONE.
I can’t care for everyone.
NO? YOU CANNOT DO EVERYTHING FOR EVERYONE. BUT YOU CAN CARE FOR EVERYONE AND LET THAT DEEP FRIENDSHIP AND GENEROSITY GUIDE ALL YOUR ACTIONS. NOT PERFECTLY. BUT YOU CAN MOVE BETTER AND BETTER IN THAT DIRECTION
What about Suzy Q and John P, God? Any specific relationship advice for them? Actually, do we even know if John P. returns Suzy Q.’s affections?
TAKE THE NEXT QUESTION.
Already? Can’t you just give Suzy some kind of a hint?
TAKE THE NEXT QUESTION.
OK, you’re the God. Our next question comes from … Well, I’ll be!, our next randomly selected question comes from Johnny P. of Big Foot, PA, and he writes, “Dear God, what should I do? All I ever think about is Suzy Q., but I don’t know how she feels or what is right for her. I want to marry her. But what is good for her? What is good for us? I don’t know what to do. Is she interested? Should she be? What is going on? Why is it like this? What am I misunderstanding? What should I do? I can’t think straight. I think I’m losing my mind.”
YOU ARE NOT LOSING YOUR MIND.
OK! Wow! Coincidence, huh! Or did you set that up?
ME? INTERFERE IN AFFAIRS OF THE HEART? I AM ETERNITY! I AM THE PERSPECTIVE BEYOND ALL PERSPECTIVES. IN ME ALL CREATION TAKES PLACE IN THE SAME MOMENT AND SPOT AND ALL SOULS SHARE ONE INFINITE JOY. NO ONE IS MARRIED. NO ONE IS ALONE. ALL ARE TOGETHER IN THE ONE LOVE.
Right, of course, of course, just a coincidence then, but — wow!, huh? We want to thank those of you who took the time to write in. If we didn’t get to your question today, maybe next week! And as always, we want to thank our dedicated script and sound staff, and our imaginary underwriter B.
